Wireless network adapter which one?

Options
I want to be able to use my desktop PC wirelessly rather than using a cable but I don't know which adapter to buy so I can go wireless. I want to buy one tomorrow so was hoping somebody could point me in the direction of a suitable one available from Argos. Many thanks.

  • This one was listed in another thread on this forum, looks like a pretty good deal to me...

I don't know what Argos have on offer, but I expect it will cost more than the one above. I've used Netgear and Belkin USB wireless adapters before and found them to be pretty reliable and easy to set up. Just be sure to get one that matches your Router ie Wireless N or Wireless G.

which router are you using? would try and make sure the software drivers for the new adapter is compatible with the wireless technology that your router has and the specification matches between the 2 pieces of hardware. i.e. pointless getting an adapter on the cheap that doesn't support wireless N when your router does.

Since the adapter suggested does support Wireless N, I'm not at all sure of the point you are trying to make.

save some dosh (like 50-75%) and buy a relatively cheapie from £5-7 off ebay. There are only a few chipsets used in wifi adapters (mainly Railink and Broadcom) regardless of the brand name on the adapter, and even if you get a G model, you won't notice any difference in speed coz it'll still transfer data faster than your internet connection.

Completely irrelevant nowadays and even buying the same brand doesn't guarantee compatibility especially when a manufacturer can change chipsets in routers in the same model number with a different revision.

I just used that as an example, maybe i should have said if either the router or adapter requires any specifics from the other device, check those specifics are met when making a purchase, doesn't hurt to be diligent.

    That's very rare thouh.
An advantage of buying the same brand wireless kit is that all the manufactures support is in one place instead of being bounced in between the two if you did have problems.

However, have checked specs of both Thomson 585 V8 and NETGEAR WNA1100 N150, and don't see any issues pairing them up for a connection.

Check Argos wireless buying guide, some good info HERE
