got the above (laptop), dual core 2.4gh 4 gig ram. sh itty intergrated graphics card, no good for games, can I install a decent graphics card or does it need a motherboard replacement too?

You can reroute via an external gfx card but wouldnt advise so...0 -
It usually costs a lot of money to make big changes to a laptop, you tend to be better off buying a higher spec one to start with.
HD and memory upgrades are usually fairly simple.
For more flexibility a tower would make sense.0 -
