Moving Home- £36 to keep my own phone number

Hi there, we're about to move house (approx 3kms in the same region) and Post Office would like me to pay £36 for the privilege of keeping my own phone number. Is this fair? Is it common practice?
Any other tips on moving utilities are gratefully received
Thanks

Are you moving within the same exchange area ? Or are you taking the number out of area?

Ah, thanks. No then. They are different OLO codes and therefore presumably different exchanges?

It is not YOUR phone number though, if you want them to re-allocate the number back to you when you move then you may have to pay sadly :o
Not sure if you can port he number to another provider and get them to have it allocated at your new address.

Normally to move number within same exchange area is free of charge. They are presumably charging you for moving it out of area.
