Life assurance for ex-cancer patient?

My Dad was diagnosed with Cancer in Feb 2000, was operated on in March 2000 and was given the all clear. He was self employed so his Endowment was cashed in to provide income.
After that we had to get him Term assurance and the best offer was the Marks & Spencer over 50 plan as they dont require medical evidence. This has been paid into up to date, almost £30 per month
Every year since then Ive tried to get better value Term assurance and the answer is always "try again in a year"
As I said his cancer is totally in the clear, he is now 58 and has other minor health issues - is on tablets for blood pressure etc.
Who is the best company for dealing with those not in the best of health? Is 5 years a long enough wait to try for insurance that requires medical evidence?
TIA

It should be noted that the M&S plan will not cover death from any pre-existing condition or death from something else that was brought on a pre-existing condition. That is why there is no underwriting involved.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. Underwiters based at Lloyd's of London can sometimes offer life assurance for people who have had cancer or other illnesses.
I believe that you have to go through a Broker to get a quote as I don't know of any Lloyd's syndicates that will deal directly with the public.
I've spent some of my career working on the IT side for these companies and they will usually consider your circumstances whereas a lot of the well known life companies are not particularly interested.Waddle you do eh?0
