You need to choose the 'advanced edit' option once you're in edit (from memory!) to change the title.

Yes I do - OH and I have moved twice in the last year doing it ourselves - by moving day I will be nearly 8 months pregnant & not about to start humping stuff again myself as I did when I was 5 months gone.

We don't have any friends locally that can help and our parents are elderly.

Not sure I can edit the title of this thread?

My baby will be born 10 days after you are due, so I can understand your reluctance to participate in moving stuff around. I'm lucky, I have 2 brothers to help my me and the husband move in just under 4 weeks. Like you, my parents are elderly and shouldn't help even if they want to.

I have an old school friend who lives in the Cotswolds. I will try to get in touch with him and see if he has any recommendations.

Wrote a reply but it's gone! Thanks for all the responses.

We don't need the packing bit - we've been living out of suitcases since we completed on our sale in May so it's all packed at my FIL's house ready to go.

Thanks for the BAR confirmation - will take a look at their website.

It will be a Friday unfortunately as we complete & OH has taken off the Friday & Monday to get the big stuff sorted as he works away from home.

    Sorted the title, thank you.

Don't use Bishop's Move (although they are BAR) - in 2007 they charged us nearly £5k........albeit to move 160 miles..........but more than a bit steep nonetheless :( Recent quotes to move a similar distance but from local companies came in at between £1800 and £2500 - we do admittedly have lots of stuff though!

Holy carp that's steep! We don't have anything near that budgeted, so if we get quotes like that hubby will have to do it himself. We have a 3 bed house plus garage bits (bikes) etc plus white goods to move.

Yep and that wasn't including packing

I do think we must have had 'mug' stamped on our foreheads back then though! We originally moved from a 3000 sq ft 6 bedder and more recently (after shedding quite a lot 'stuff'-wise!) from a 1600 sq ft 5 bed back up to a 2000+ sq ft jobbie. That said, I've yet to hear of anyone being charged as much as we were by BM :(

So don't worry, I think we're the exception rather than the rule and I'm sure you'll find plenty of reliable companies that come in within your budget!

Well we've had quotes from £1300 - £600 so far. The lowest one is a BAR member but wants payment in full 7 days before move - is this fair & safe? Paying by credit card for Sec 75 (would it cover anyway?) would add 2.5%. WOuld you pay in advance?

    hi

I used a well known BAR removal firm (have a black cat logo) and had a very bad experience. I was going to take my 2 wk old £80 microwave in the car but the removals guy insisted on putting it in the van. On his way to the van he dropped it on the drive and smashed it - all ok he said I will tell them it was my fault and they will get you a new one. They also scratched the parka floor in the hall (we were leaving a rented prop) and broke a bookcase (only a cheap one from Ikea but it was cracked on the top). They were so rude and horrible about this - no apoligies just rudeness and denials. I only got £30 back from them in the end (there was a £50 excess on the policy) even though he dropped my new mico. They said it was my fault the floor was scratched as I should have taked down a fitted light that was in the hall (they never said this when they quoted and I have moved 6 times and have never had to remove fitted lights) !!!! and they denied all knowledge of the book case.

Since then I have used a family run local business that was recommended. Smaller local firms are far more concerned about having and keeping their reputation than some of the bigger well known firms.
