  • I would love to make some teacup candles. What size wick would you suggest for those, please?

I used the LX10 wick for my votive and small teacups (approx 70mm diameter) but there was some wax left around the cup that didn’t melt whilst burning so maybe a thicker one (LX12 or 16) should have been used, but I just recycled the unmelted wax into my next batch.

Check out their website they have a chart recommending the wick size per container dimension.

Their scents that I have used and would thoroughly recommend are the Cherry, Cranberry, Vanilla and Lemon one that was not for me was the Christmas Pudding – yuk, yuk, yuk - smelt like pure treacle _pale_.

I do like Pandora’s idea of using birthday candles and may try that the next batch I make (not to be given as presents) when I have time to watch them and catch the right time to insert the candle.

I make teacup candles and the only thing I buy is the wick from ebay. I recycle wax from tealights and other dregs I have, then I have some string and little luggage tages I got for our wedding two years ago. They make really sweet presents without costing the Earth. • really like the thought of doing this, as I am candle mad!! ... but, where u say about using birthday candles, I am being incredibly thick here, do u mean you put the whole candle inside the semi set wax? sorry to ask what is more than likely a stupid question!! thanks x

I haven't used that method as yet, but yes i'm assuming that is what you do as if you put it in when still hot it will just melt and the wick will collapse.

That method has also got me thinking about using normal household candles too when making bigger ones.

Someone around these boards (GQ I think just to thank for the tip) uses Pringle tubs as moulds, and I keep old candle jars to remake them into.

    Good luck.
Yep...still at it, working out how to retire early.:D....... Going to have to rethink that scenario as have been screwed over by the company. A work in progress.
  • Hi,

I've been making candles on and off for quite a while.

    I use for wax https://www.4candles.co.uk

    For scent https://www.sensoryperfection.co.uk

The American scents are stronger and better than the UK ones. Her UK ones are safe to be used in soap though....

You can use anything to make them in. I've even seen them made in old teacups and they looked sweet.

For fancy moulds go to https://www.fullmoons-cauldron.co.uk

Once you catch the bug for candles you move on to soaps.....

Just a note on using birthday cake candles - as above it works well if they are inserted in the wax when it is almost set through. It is important that this isn't just when the surface is solidifying, otherwise the cake candle melts and wilts, which in turn causes the wick to burn unevenly. The wax needs to be coolish and quite 'thick'. I'm still learning but this does seem to be an easy method.

It's worth saving up used cake candles too - after all these only tend to be lighted for a few seconds so there is plenty left.

Finally, I can't take credit for the wick idea as I read it elsewhere on here a while ago. So thanks to whose ever idea it was in the first place!

And thank you for resurrecting it! It's so obvious when you think about it, but who'da thunk it?
