Fitting a Gas Fire-Help!

Hello everyone,
I'm looking to have some work done in the house but I'm not sure which professionals I need to call in!
Basically, there are two gas fires in the living room, one on either side. I would like to close one fire completely and update the remaining one.
They are old (very old) style gas fires with a visible pipe going in providing the gas (sorry I don't know the technical term). I would like to have the remaining fire ripped out and have a new one (gas) put in that is placed in the wall with the pipe in the wall also.
Who do I need to carry out this work? Builder? Gas Fitter? both? Also how do I go about finding them?! I was thinking about checking yell.com and calling the first five I find to give me a quote. How much should this cost approximately?
Sorry for all the questions, any help is much appreciated!
P.s Any recommendations in the Hertfordshire area are most welcome!

You need a plumber who is GAS SAFE registered.make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

You need a gas safe registered engineer with a ticket for dealing with gas fires on mains gas (presuming you are not on an LPG tank or bottles).

If you can't get a personal recommendation then put your post code in that site and see who you can find.
When yo contact them tell them you have one fire you want disconnecting and and made safe so you can rip it out yourself or get a builder to do the ripping and discuss options and costs on the other one.0
