Loft insulation grant offered

Options
Hi all

Just popped over from the Moneysaving Oldstyle board for some advice if you'd be so good.

What do you think about this loft insulation offer? We had a guy call yesterday offering subsidised insulation for £199. Apparently the utility company pays the rest

Our loft in our 30's semi has only about 35 cm and they will give us the new standard which seems very thick and renew our loft hatch and draught proof it. They will also ventilate the loft through the roof tiles and soffits.

My question is-has anyone had it done and is the loft OK with all that insulation?

We have been told that our fuel bill savings will be 35% + which is a big attraction. The firm is Sheffield something.

Any thoughts gratefully received.

I suggest you check first with with your utility co, as you may be able to get both loft insulation and cavity wall insulation for free.
And no, it will not cut your fuel bills by anything like 35%-not all your fuel is used for heating remember.

£199? Seems average pricing for most people who don't even get the subsidised grant. I'm sure the government stopped the subsidy anyway.

If you have easy access to the loft and are capable of doing the job i.e. not put a foot through the ceiling. The job is actually very easy to do.
Sometimes you can get really cheap rockwool insulation for £2 per roll and you can do the job for £20.

I think you can get the job done by someone for around £150 easily.

35CM loft insulation is more than adequate.

That's Sheffield Insulations presumably - big firm.

Go on the EST (Energy Saving Trust) website and see what you can get it done for with a grant contribution. Cheapest for our 4-bed house was £99.

Mine was £99 too - I booked on the energysavingtrust website. Took quite a few weeks to get it installed but just paid £99 for the full-blown 270mm of loft insulation.

I doubt whether the insulation is 35cm thick, more likely to be 35mm.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.

It IS 270mm thick. The first layer is put between the joists and the second layer is laid perpendicular to the first layer. Both layers are very thick and I watched two poor blokes lay the insulation down. It's a really sh*tty job. They then lag the loft hatch too and put up warning signs on the loft means to warn people to step carefully.
