Filezilla poss. firewall problem

Has anyone here used Filezilla? Recently I downloaded the latest version of Filezilla and can't get it to work. I have done the FTP servers test and it came back with:
Error: Connection timed out
  • Timeouts are usually caused by some router and/or firewall that is interrupting the connection.
  • Try uninstalling all firewalls and plug your computer directly into your modem, thus bypassing the router.
I have checked windows firewall and Filezilla is ok to go with that. So I'm guessing it must be from one of the many pieces of virus protection I using.
I'm not 100% this is correct. I was using Filazilla last year and had this same problem when I only had windows firewall and avg as protection. Someone helped me but I have no idea what they did.

Have you tried the Windows FTP client from command prompt?

Are you using FileZilla client or server? Sounds like the issue could be a firewall issue. If it's the Client, it depends on how your FTP client is configured, with FileZilla, the default is auto but the other options are active and passive, you can change this per connection if you select site manager and add a new site and then select the "transfer settings" tab.If you are using the Server this might help: http://wiki.filezilla-project.org/FAQ

Looked for your previous post but didn't find it, though one mentioned about a passive or active FTP setting for IE

By default, browsers use Passive FTP and is considered more firewall friendly.

If the PC your using is running the server, then these web pages should explain how FTP works and which ports you'll need to open/forward:
