My new house will need everything doing, it hasnt been touched since it was build in the 30 (except the 70s bathroom of olive green). I would guess at central heating and rewire and windows first? The children and i are staying in the rent accom, and my partner will be in house. Any hints, tips, things to avoid, horror warnings? Its a 4 bed, 3 recpe. 1 bath house, with no chance of extentions, and not really much point/space for a loft converstion. Thinking of moving small kitchen in to recep room and having a shower/ unities in the old kitchen.
Any ideas of where to start, where to look?

We've been renovating house that is 97 yrs old & hadnt been touched for 50 years. My advise would be 'look for woodworm'. We found loads. And, we had windows fitted first which we feel should have been done much later (i.e. we had windows, then built an extension) mistake on our part. Watch that budget!! Good luck
Shop around for deals. They're out there. Take your time getting the right pirce and the right product.0 -
Central heating (boiler, pipes, radiators), wiring, fusebox (fit a Residual Current Device to prevent fatal electric shocks), window boards, skirting, architraves and door frames, doors, walls (strip and patch or skim), ceilings, bathroom and kitchen, coving, fire place(s), floorboards, pointing, guttering, drains, soil pipe(s) and so on. Oh yes, and then there is the garden ...
Bear in mind that it can be cheaper to hire a professional to do many jobs rather than rent for longer. You can hire individual tradesmen/women, but if you want a project manager to coordinate work so that work is done in the correct order, you will need a building firm. It costs more, but it saves your time and worry.Warning: This forum may contain nuts.0
