I need help:(

i have been with my current employers for just over 6 months now.I have been told today that one of our customers need to perform credit/crb/money laundering/identity checks on me. I only really have a problem with the credit checking as i'm trying to sort my debts out but on paper i look terrible, no ccjs but i'm sure i've the worst rating going.

I don't know what to do - if i don't agree they don't get work from their biggest customer = i will probably be let go rather than that.

if i do agree, they see my bad credit and i risk a similar fate i think.

I only do admin and have nothing to do with cash/money/money advice... I'm working hard to clear my debt sand improve my score.

This wasn't a pre requisite to my employment (or i wouldn't have bothered) only new employees need these checks too no body else...

i don't know what to do :(

Tell them your situation, if you're just admin I can't see a problem.

  • Don't worry, it's a standard check and they will not hold your poor credit rating/score against you. As long as fraudulent activity doesn't show on your file, you'll be OK. Good luck in your new job.

Definitely no fraud - i'm panicking as it's for a company of surveyors - so involved with mortgages - but i have no influence over them/any thing to do with actual valuing.

Would it be worth telling my boss about my poor credit before they carry out the checks so it's not a surprise?

Yes Bramble - it would be worth telling them, but make sure they totally understand what you are saying as many people get confused about different kinds of debt.

My boss doesn't work in the same office as me or i would - nor is there the facility to speak to him privately over the phone, so email atleast lets me compose it a few times before the send button gets hit.

I wouldn't share with your boss - imagine how that conversation will go, and imagine baring your soul in an email. As you say there is no fraud, and as other posters have said all it will show is a bad (but improved) rating

If questioned for not sharing afterwards say you were uneasy sharing by email, and there was no other mechanism provided by the business (or blame me!!)

credit checks are usually looking for CCJs for jobs at your level. So if you don't have those you may be fine.

Do you have a lot of late payments on your record, or just high credit limits/ a lot of debt? Late payments may be a grey area. A lot of debt is fine as long as you are managing it.
