If you are considering doing the windows yourself, there is something else to consider.

Because of changes to building regs (part L). New windows have to comply. If a window company installs them, they have to be registered with FENSA. They will register your job for you.

Doing them yourself, or having a builder doing them will need you to apply for permission from your local building inspector. This costs around the £100 mark depending on your local council. At the end of the job they are meant to inspect the glass and make sure everything is up to spec.

If you don't apply and want to sell your house. If their surveyor notices new windows without the right paperwork you will have problems. It's worth applying and doing it properly.

  • Also try and go for a company that do not expect paying until the job is completed....no windows no loss

  • I used to work for Zenith Windows as a salesman.

    Some advice:

We want your house as a showhome so will do it cheaper, this is pitched to everybody don't feel special.

The intial price we gave could be lowered by up to 70%

You do NOT have to sign up that night to get that special price, if you phone them once the salesman has been and say you would like to buy they won't turn you away.

Surprised they haven't been back with the "we're doing a special offer" (another grand off), then the "we're the direct supplier for <company x>" (another grand off)...

Many years ago I had a quote for a porch - went from £8k down to less than £2k very eventually and 3 different (honest guv) companies - still too expensive.

I got Frametech and they are or were from Bristol. Good frames and Pilkington sealed units. They were well below half the price of Zenith. Both neighbours either side have them and the house over the road and all are happy.

My son has just had 5 windows put in by one of the leading large companies - what a blooming mess - they are only held in by expanding foam and such a
mess that the manager came from the main depot and has said they have to come out and be put in again - they left the job unfinished and came back 10 days later to finish it and this is the result - he has consulted trading standards and he is actually entitled for them to remove the windows competely and to replace with the equivalent he had before and give his money back - he is hoping the boss keeps to his word and comes to supervise the taking out and putting back in and that they will do 2 very large windows he has left not done for nothing for his compensation rather than money as he will never go to them again and the windows will not be a match with another company!
They get you which ever way they can eh!

The moral - go to a small company and look to see what jobs they have done locally as stated before
Saving in my terramundi pot £2, £1 and 50p just for me! :j

I had a window fitted by a small firm years ago, and that was held in by expanding foam.
    Done a good job though.
