Hi all,
In my trying to be organised head, I started thinking ahead to my lo's bday. It's in the winter and I would ideally like to offer something hot as well as a cold buffet. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Have you done anything hot previously that went down really well?
I know it will be chaotic - so it will have to be easy to serve up etc on the day.
The only thing I can think of so far is pizza, but I would have to make a lot and then I would be tied up putting them in and out of the oven etc....
thanks in advance.

Chill con carne with jacket potatoes is always popular - a mild version for the kids would be fine I'd think.Team Pink! Baby girl due 25/5/140

Mini hot dogs?0

Curry and rice in a big pot that people can help themselves too is always popular. Stews and soups too, basically anything you can stick a big spoon in and let people get themselves a bowl-full.0

We've done jacket potatoes for people - just filled the oven with jacket spuds and let them cook while we're busy doing other things. Then, they get a choice of fillings - grated cheese, baked beans, special baked beans (basically BBQ beans with bacon and sausage, etc), tuna and mayo, chilli con carne or chip shop curry sauce - that kind of thing. The fillings can easily be heated quickly and put in a big bowl each so people can help themselves. Likewise for grated cheese and tuna mayo toppings.

Lasagne, garlic bread and salad for the adults, maybe a spinach and ricotta canneloni if there are vegetarians included.
Cold buffet, salami, serrano ham, pastrami, olives, sun dried tomatoes, green salad, feta cheese, a good olive oil, baby tomatoes.
A tomato/cheesy pasta bake for the kids, some cocktail sausages and a bowl of tomato sauce, also some baby tomatoes, slices of cucumber, some mild cheese slices.
Nibbles like small savoury biscuits, crisps and dips, crudites, nuts, cheese straws for nibbles before hand.
Eton mess for dessert, (crumbled meringues, cream and chopped up strawberries and rasperries), stick icecreams for the kids, or a hot apple crumble and custard.
Maybe, a mug of soup on the way out into the cold......:rotfl:Felines are my favourite

Do curry as previously suggested, but instead of rice which can be a bit "iffy" - especially if left to go cold, do naans for dippiong and a plate of bhajis (sp??) etc that are cheap in any supermarket and even cheaper if you go macro or somewhere like that............Children are born with wings .... I would say jacket potatoes are a great idea...you could have a table full of toppings like cheese, coleslaw, beans, chilli, tuna etc and a big bowl of salad
How about pizza too?"More people would learn from their mistakes if they weren't so busy denying them." - Harold J. Smith:cool:0 -
As far as informal do's go I agree with the others in saying that baked potatoes are the way to go.
Cheap, easy and straight forward to prepare, easy to scale (you can feed 8 or 80 if you have a big enough oven) and hot, tasty and easy to eat, and easy to accommodate fussy eaters if neccesary.
At family do's we usually have as many potatoes as you think you'll need plus a few extra (the unused baked can always be chopped up later for frying which is great) a pot of beans, a pot of chilli (simple or as fancy as you like), some grated cheese and a bowl of homemade coleslaw and a bit of salad to liven it up ans you're almost there!
If you really want to push the boat out a few packs of sausages cooked in the oven and kept warm can work too.
Add a ready made desert or a slice of cake and you're done!0 -
thank you for the great suggestions everyone.
Im thinking mini hot dogs for the little ones and then jacket potatoes for the adults. I can then do one hot dish (like curry or chilli) and then offer cheese, beans, coleslaw etc too.
