I know this can be done, there are videos all over youtube, but what is the technical behind this.
I belive it is because the sensor bar sends of inferred which is like a light (just invisible to the naked eye). the wiimote picks up these two lights. The wiimote is fooled into thinking it is the sensor bar when you use candles insted.
I'm proberbly totaly wrong though lol
What i'm also curious in is why the sensor bar is connected to the wii. is it merly for power to the infer red bulbs, or does it feed signal back to the wii?

As far as I can tell it’s just so that the Wii can centre the controller, and the wire is just for power.
Until looking into this I always thought it was the receiver for the controller.

The bar emits IR light (similar to remote controls), the Wiimote uses the IR to orientate itself, it then relays its postion/angle to the Wii via bluetooth. The candles act the same as the sensor bar as they emit heat in the form of IR radiation.
If you have a Wii and a digi cam. Aim the digi cam at the sensor bar and the IR leds init will show up white on your LCD screen. This is beacause Digital cameras are able to detect IR and most use it for focusing.
Hope this helps
