The most important thing when using rechargable batteries is to get a decent charger..one that is smart and can sense when the batteries are charged.because overcharging kills them.the better chargers can sense how many batteries are in and charge accordingly...this is usefull if you have gadgets that use 3 batts...another thing...try and keep your batteries in sets by marking them ..not so important if your charger can sense individual batts ..also look for charges that work on different voltages including 12volt for the car if you intend to use your kit outdoors or on foreign hols..I have been using NiMh for many years for Gps,walkie talkies, headlight torches ect and they have saved me a small fortune..BTW a headlight torch is one of the the best tools I own..was great for laying loft insulation.

  • the one i have is unicross, it seems to be quite good, and said to only to be charged with 2 or 4 batt at the same time. it has lights too so hopefully it will tell me when the battery is fully charged or not.

have keep the receipt so if it is crap i will be able to change it!

Mine is a Uniross Sprint 1-2 hour charger ..it switches off when the batts are fully charged, you can tell this because the red charging light goes out but the green mains light stays on ...Although the batteries are not charging at this point the mains adaptor plug is still drawing power so turn off to save lecky as soon as you notice the change..I plug mine in via a mechanical timer set to 3 hours because I have a perminant senior moment:)

  • my uniross charger says it takes 9 hours to charge AA battery, um, i think this is probably the slowest one it is. does anyone know if it uses much electricity, and if it will be more efficient if i buy a more expensive charger which charge quickly or else?

    thanks!

Mine starts off using 11 watts with 4 AA's in ,so if the wattage stayed the same for two hours that would be just 22 watts used. A 1000 watts of lecky costs around 10 pence so its for nothing really.... Unless your charger is less efficient than mine it probably costs the same to run as it might only use a watt or two but for the longer period ..

I have two uniross chargers - one small one that goes in the socket that holds 4 AA size batteries and also a large charger that charges all sizes.
Just looked at the back of them for the times and for the AA 2100 mAh batteries I bought from Aldi's before Xmas it says 8 hours on the large charger and 19 hours on the smaller one ! ~ Think I'll use more of the larger charger - I hate waiting...
