Gas Fire Casing - Paint??

I have a (probably) 1980's gas fire, with a rather dated black
chipboard casing. I want to rejuvenate it with a coat of paint if possible - pref not black or at least a less, dated looking black.
My question is which paint should I use to cover over the chipboard
laminate? Im really lost.....
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
