beware reclaim expert department

please warn people - my elderly mother has been targeted by phone calls from 'an auditor' from the 'reclaim expert dept of the ministry of justice'. they say they are dealing with claims for overpaid bank charges and get bank details by sounding very official. they then say a representative will call to the house with a cheque for a specific amount which is money owed. Without realising, she has been charged £59.99 already. If contacted by them, tel the action fraud office on 0300 123 2040, who are aware but who want more reports to build up a picture. This seems to be an international problem - I could find several references re these tel calls from New Zealand posts. Of most concern is that they told my mother someone would be coming to her home - but not to tell anyone re the tel calls.

The ministry of justice has issued warnings to consumers that they do not handle or get involved in claims and any company saying they are representing or from the MoJ is doing so fraudulently.

There are a lot of scam claims companies out there and cold calling is rife at the moment.

  • I've just had one of these calls! I googled it as I was on the phone and saw all the reports of it being a scam. How was your Mother charged £59.99???
  • My daughter just had one of these phone calls too from 06302132643, telling her that she'd been overpaid bank charges amounting to over £4,000 and asking for bank details to do a BACS transfer.
She said 'just send me a cheque' and hung up.
