Laptop making a funny noise...

I think it's the fan. It starts off, rattles for a few seconds then stops. About a minute later it starts again. The laptop is not getting very hot however - I keep it raised on the back edge so it slants towards me an there's air circulating under it - been doing that with all my lappies.
Should I worry, as the fan doesn't seem to be working properly?

Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.

How old is the laptop ?
Make & model ?
Can you feel air being blown from the fan ? have you ever vac'ed the dust out ? Are the inlets blocked ?
Would you know if it was a "hard disk" noise ? Is the first rattle as the Laptop starts booting up ? Or as windows starts ?Rich people save then spend.

It's an HP, not sure of model, 1GB RAM, 100GB HD, bought brand new about 5 months ago but used it very little - been using the other one more as it has a bigger screen.
The rattle is not the hard drive because it doesn't make any noise when it boots up etc. Only when the fan tries to start.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0 -
