Single persons occupancy?

Hello I think this may be the best place to post this.:)
Me and my partner are buying our first home together, we move in on the 29th so I'm busy setting up the utilities etc.
I have called my council today and they said I can't get a single persons allowance although my partners main residence is in the Army, and he pays council tax and where is now already?
I'm sure we should be able to get a discount, I'm not sure what to do now, maybe the law has changed?
If anyone could help me that would be great! I will continue to research.:)

If he is in the mess, he doesnt really pay council tax, just a token contribution.
I can't get single persons allowance even though my wife works 8000 miles away and is out of the country 9 months a year!
Some councils seem to be more slack with the regs than others, you may just be unlucky.0 -
That's rubbish isn't it!
I think your right different councils seem to have different rules. I did send the e-mail off, they have e-mailed back after some details so it wasn't a straight no. Hmmmmm:think:
His clerk said he wouldn't get a discount, but he may be able to get a little money towards his petrol so it's better than nothing.
Shame you can't get the discount! Thank you for the reply!

Is he still going to paying accommodation charges after you're married? If yes, then his main home is in the block. If no (i.e. he's claiming to the army his home is with you, and during the week he's away from home), then you have to pay the full council tax on your married home.
When OH (RN) and I married, I lived in my flat, and he had a misappropriated quarter (he has children from a previous marriage, so it gave them somewhere to stay at weekends) - he paid the normal charges for the quarter, plus CILOCT with the single person's discount as he was the only adult there, and I paid council tax less the single person's discount on my flat. So, we both paid council tax for the properties at single person rates, but unlike in your case, his wasn't single person's accommodation and he paid accommodation charges.
Hope that makes sense.Mortgage Free thanks to ill-health retirement0 -
unfortunately the only way you will get 'petrol' money is if he is on your CT bill (you need to give a copy of this and a recent utility bill to the clerk), otherwise it would be classed as fraud as he isnt legally registered to live at your property. It depends on how far away he is to how you would benefit.0

Hello!
Don't worry bumblebeebaby we would do it all legit, I have called the council already to set up payment, they have both our names on the bill, they are looking into it for us so I'm just waiting for a reply. It's worth trying.
Trying to be good- OH will still be paying charges after we are married yea.:)
Marker- He won't be living there full time no, his main accommodation is registered at the army. He's back most weekends at the moment.
Just have to see what the council say.
Thanks for all your help. xxxMortgage at Highest:£145,000

Good luck with your council!
I've been in the navy more than a few years and married just a few less.
We have tried a few times to get any discount on our council tax, some people manage it but I've not heard of anyone getting the full single persons discount.
The one thing we have had is a £140 rebate in my pay towards council tax but that came after a 9 month deployment out of the country in hot sandy places, on return our writers (clerks) processed the claim for everyone on the Ship so it was almost automatic, just had to chase them up every month to make sure it was going through!
Would rather have had my pay tax free like any civilian would have had!
Your OH should get GYH pay (petrol money) and I'm assuming you're not married then he will still have to pay for his accomodation on the base and CILOCT.
Hope some of that made sense and is useful!!!!!0
