Sounds like you're on the wrong site, then. This one's about moneysaving, not wasting

  • It's lovely frozen. Good with leek and grated carrot, or onion and potato or carrot and turnip...

I like it thick enough to stand a spoon up in!

Yesterday decided to attempt traditional scotch broth in the slow cooker, I used 250g soaked barley broth mix with grated carrots turnip ,leek, onion, celery and lamb stock from sundays leg of lamb. Left it on all day, but now tastes a bit slimey added water and looks a bit better, but not like me grannies soup at all. Can anybody help me here with a good receipe, or suggest where I went wrong? Regards.:o

I am not 100% sure but sometimes the broth mixes (if they have peas in) need boiling as well as soaking. The slimeyness could be from the peas.
I make Scotch broth quite alot so my Islay Granny would be proud! I soak the broth mix overnight in cold water then boil it for 20 minutes before adding it to the pan but I don't make it in a slow cooker so it could be different. :)

I find this website very useful but I doubt it will have slow cooker alternatives but I am sure someone else will know http://www.rampantscotland.com/recipes/blrecipe_index.htm

As a Scot who lives to eat, I ought to know.....but I'm not sure, especially as I use a pressure cooker wherever possible.
However, it does occur to me that without the lamb stock it would be a vegetarian dish, & I would promote that all-day long:D ... & it also might be the problem? ...err, the stock I mean.

Sorry jinny, not very helpful but I'm only just awake :)

this is my Fathers recipe for scotch broth from ne scotland

    3pts cold water
    1/2lb rib
    2oz pearl barley
    1oz lentils
    1 med onion
    1/4lb swede turnip
    1 med carrot
    1 leek

veg all cut small and put all in pan with 1tsp salt, 1tsp sugar, 1 chicken stock cube, boil gently 21/2hrs, its lovely, the sugar sweetens the broth but not that you would actually taste it, if you see what i mean

  • I have bought some broth mix and am currently soaking them in preparation for making a fab nutritious and cheap soup tomorrow like my mum used to make but unfortunately she isn't here anymore so I need some help!

How do I turn the soaked lentils into soup?

    Hi milliemonster,

I think broth can mean different things to people in different parts of the country. There's an earlier thread with an assortment of recipes that should help you to find something like your mum used to make so I've added your thread to it.
