You're OH "let" you buy a slow cooker? Maybe he won't let you cook scotch broth in it.

  • Hmmmm not sure i appreciate the tone of that reply.

Maybe let was the wrong choice of word, but we both have to agree before we buy anything for the house.

I was also under the impression that on this board I could ask for advice without the contents of my posts being judged. Maybe in the future I will look elsewhere, if this is the sort of response I should expect in reply to my questions

Sorry if I've upset you but I've lived with a very controlling man and get a bit agitated if I think someone else is suffering as I did. Happy slow cooking.

try this recipe, i will look out my fathers one later, but this looks good too
http://thefoody.com/soups/scotchbroth.html, it will do for the slow cooker, i would put boiling water in, rather than cold and put the cooker on high, when soup is simmering turn it down to low and leave about 6-7 hours, someone else will be along who can be more precise

this is my fathers recipe for scotch broth

    3 1/2 pts cold water
    1/2lb rib, beef
    2oz barley
    1oz lentils
    1 med onion
    1/4lb turnip, usually swede
    1 med carrot
1 leek all veg cut small

add all to pan with 1tsp salt and 1tsp sugar ( it does improve the flavour)
and 1 chicken cube, boil gently 2 1/2 hrs or it could all go into the slow cooker

  • Coincidentally, I have a slow cooker full of Scotch Broth simmering away at he moment.

I just used leeks, carrots, half a sweet potato (it was either that or it got binned) and a load of broth mix, topped up with hot water, stock and a bay leaf.

It's also really nice if you add any bits and pieces of chicken or leftover meat you have spare. Very soothing if you are suffering from the flu!

    Hope you enjoy it.

Edited to add - turnip has quite a strong taste, so unless you are a big fan, I wouldn't add too much.
