Need home insurance which covers landlord

Hi,
I've got to take out contents insurance that also covers my landlords property for at least £2500, is there any advice on the cheapest company's to offer this?

I've got some quotes thru Moneysupermarket but the ones I've had time to look at dont mention anything about covering landlords contents, off to work now, I would really appreciate any advice on finding a cheap policy with this. The one the letting agent has got me to sign (today is the last day I have to cancel) is £13.99 a month!

Well that was interesting, the cheapest quote I got thru Moneysupermarket was from legal and general and so I phoned them up and they said it included the cover for the landlords contents so that was okay and it was £5.75/month. Significantly lower than the £13.99 the company that the letting agent tried to railroad me into using.
This may be somthing the site should look into, there was a lot of pressure from the letting agent to use their recommended insurer.0 -
I am insured with NIG through anlocal broker and they seem ok.Covers rentral loss etc.0

The OP is looking for "tenants" insurance - ie contents that will cover damage they cause to the items owned by the landlord within the property (eg if its a furnished flat then damage to the sofas etc) rather than landlords insurance.
To the OP - it is not a big selling feature and so you wont see it on summaries etc but certainly a large proportion of contents policies include it as standard (from memory anyway)0 -
I might be wrong here (it has happened) but I think you can't insure someone else's property, they have to insure it.
The LL should really be sorting their own insurance out, and if necessary making a charge as part of the rent to cover it.
The tenant might be able to get some sort of liability cover, but that would only be for something that would be the tenant's fault.
e.g
1. Tenant trips over and pours a bucketful of bleach onto sofa which is ruined - tenant's fault - LL's insurance (if accidental damager cover taken) and/or tenant's liability insurance pay.
2. Mains electrical circuit failure causes small fire leading to sofa being singed and ruined - Not tenant's fault - LL's insurance pays. I'm not sure that a tenant's policy would pay out in this situation. If the insurer did pay out, they might well sue the LL for the pay out being caused by "their" electrical installation.

The landlord should insure their own property. You have no vested interest in whether it's damaged or not (aside from losing your deposit, I suppose, which is likely to be less than the value of the landlord's contents!)DMP Mutual Support Thread member 244

You have a vested, financial interest through the tenancy agreement if it holds you responsible for damage. This is what allows you to insure another persons property.0 -
