Transferring money from USA to UK

Hi all,

Advice would be much appreciated on the most cost-effective way of receiving money from somebody in the USA.

This is money that my future mother-in-law is sending me to help pay for my wedding, it'll be about $3.5k or something like that.

I'm sure there's a very simple way of doing this without having to pay huge fees or get a terrible exchange rate, but I'm fairly ignorant on these matters! Any help would be great, thanks.

I have recieved money from the USA via MoneyGram and Western Union but to be honest they are probably not the most secure if the money goes missing. I would do bank to bank, yes you have a fee but with that much money you have the safety that it doesn't go a miss.

I tranferred $2000 to the USA a couple of years ago and it was £25. Not terrible I thought.

I have used xoom.com before in the past. They now appear to be offering credit via Faster Payments to most accounts for a flat fee of $4.99 per transfer

However, check the current exchange rate against other sites also for comparison to see if it is competitive. xe.com is also another good site to check

Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning
