Landlord Insurance

Hi I have recently rented out my property and wondered if I need to specifically take landlord insurance or if I can just take buildings insurance (tennant is responsible for conents). Thanks

    It's always best to have specific landlords insurance, it does cover things your normal buildings insurance does not have. I'll pm a recommendation if you want me to.
  • Thanks, I understand that landlords insurance covers certain protection however I am not too bothered about the majority as I rent my property to my nephew. There seems to be a big difference between the two. If you could suggest any providers that would be great. Again many thanks!!

    You can either cancel your existing insurance and save the money, or replace it with landlord's insurance.

    You 'normal' domestic insurance, whether buildings, contents or both together, will not be valid if you have rented the property. If you ever make a claim they will simply refuse to pay out!

    So, if you want insurance, it must be Landlord's insurance. Whether you decide to have LL's buildings, contents or both is up to you but obviously depends what contents you have in the property. Is it furnished? If not does it have white goods of yours (fridge etc)? Carpets? Curtains?

    If there's not much, you might decide not to bother with contents cover and if you lose those items it in a fire/theft whatever you'll just buy replacements.

    Some specialist Landlord's buildings policies come with automatic £2000 (ish) contents cover to cover situations like this. Use Google and shop around, but compare the cover, as well as the price.

    Or use your Landlord's Association who often offer discount insurance deals.
