I am renovating a house, I am at the first fix stage ready for the electrical wiring, I would like to hard wire my 2 son's computers and xboxes and maybe other points around the house, also thinking about hard wiring it all back to a printer which would be near the wireless router.
In our present house I just bought cable with the cat type sockets (I think) and dropped them down from the ceiling into the computers etc. Not very neat I know, as the new house is at a good stage to hide all these cables in the new walls I am not sure how to do it, I know I can get wall sockets that take these cables but are they easy to wire at the back of them? is there a kit thats already wired in the back of the socket? to save me wiring them.

Many brands of sockets will have the wiring colour code printed somewhere in the box. There is usually type A and type B but if you're using sockets at both ends it doesn't matter which type you use as long as you use the same both ends. You'll need a punch-down terminator tool although it's possible to use a thin screwdriver and a pair of sharp, narrow cutters if you're up for doing it that way.
The job itself isn't difficult in the slightest and is no more difficult than wiring a power outlet, just a few more wires.
If you can try and go for a brand such as Brand-Rex.0 -
That's splitting one CAT5 cable into 2 and will reduce the capable speed of the NICs on modern network configurations.0 -
did'nt spot they were 2's....whoops
should have found single fronts
cables can be run in and the boxs postioned on a first fix, then SINGLE fronts
individual cables run back to wherever the router is to be locatedEx forum ambassador

So the ones off Ebay should be okay? reads like they are colour coded.
If I was wiring the computers back to the printer would it be an other wire?no debts0 -
if it's a network printer you can plug it straight into the router, or have its own wall port as well0

Make sure one of the socket is near your main TV set.More0

You could, in theory have cat5/cat6 sockets at every bank of power sockets in the house. You never know when you might move things around.Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0
