I am changing my current car insurance to the AA.
i am planning to buy a new car within the next 6 months. not sure how insurance works if i get a new car? can i just amend my policy - or do i have to cancel it and take out a new policy and will that be a big issue?
thanks

Simply ring up the insurance company your with at the time and amend the policy.
If you have an idea of the car you will be getting in the next 6 months, it might be an idea to do a few quotes using the new car as well as the old car!0 -
Hi, the AA will charge you a £25 fee every time you change vehicle details. Other charges on top of that could be added depending on which vehicle you change to (its value, does it have an immobiliser, insurance grouping etc). If your new vehicle reduces your premium you MIGHT get money back but insurance companies seldom do this and some will even juggle things like your excess without telling you to avoid paying out. Anyone who might doubt this should study their 'before and after' documents (make a copy of your old one if they ask it to be returned) from when they changed vehicle details. It happens a lot and not just with small insurers.

one thing you need to be aware of,and i speak with vast experience,is that if your insurance company has given you a good deal on your present vehicle, you may find that their quote on your next one will not be as good. Its surprising how some companies "prefer" to insure certain cars. This wont be a problem if you are buying the same car again though obviously.
If this is the case you may need to change companies when you renew your insurance the following year. There are two sides to every story.

In 2005 I changed cars 3 weeks before the end of a policy, they waived the admin fee, but the increase in premium for 3 weeks was £80! Thing is when getting quotes for both the old and new cars there was very little difference in premiums, no more than £50 more a year and with some companys the new car was cheaper to insure.
I would have cancelled the policy instead but I needed the NCD.0
