Huge Leasehold Repair Invoice!

Hi,

So, I just moved into a leasehold flat a couple of months ago and today I came home to an invoice for exterior redecoration and repair for £3500 payable now. I previously received a notice of work but the figures mentioned on there added up to £1100 for the entire block!

Needless to say, I don't have that kind of money and would be unable to pay it by installments (unless its over years!)... 18k and two kids barely adds up as is.

What is the legal situation? £3500 x 6 flats = a lot of money. It just seems ridiculous.

Can I appeal? Can the landlord just do this?!

Reading my lease suggests these fees should be capped at £250 unless there has been 'proper consultation'.

Please advise!

Matthew

Hi - I'm in a similar situation - except with £11k + worth of service charges. My first step was to try and get a full breakdown of the quotes and specs as these were not provided with the invoice. These haven't been forthcoming as yet, so my next step is to lodge a formal complaint with the ProManCo following their complaint procedures.

I've created a thread somewhere on MSE - click on my name and it should take you to it.

    Hope it helps.

you would have been issued a section 20 notice, when did you get this? There is a minimum 30 day consultations period. Is it possible it was issued prior to you moving? Find out from the management co.
