advice regarding fraud

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could advise me regarding a situation that has arose. I paid a deposit of 1000 for a new car, and it has now transpired that the car dealer has disappeared. I have contacted the police and they are investigating. I cannot determine whether he actually had went bust or whether he was a scam artist. A finance company that he used has said that they had arranged finance for him in the past with used cars, however he recently had ordered high end vehicles from a garage in London. Do I have any comeback on this or is it a case of wait for the police to investigate and see what happens??
Golden Rule No 1: pay with credit card!!!!FURIOUS
Thanks
