Royal mail question

This is a bit off topic but I thought ebayers would probably know the answer.
Does anyone know what the Royal Mail do with letters/parcels returned as 'Not known at this address' when there is no return address on the envelope?
My mother in law has sent my husband and I birthday cards containing money to the wrong address. I've been to the address she used and the person had put them back in the post (I know it might be a lie but I do believe her). I just wondered if there was any point going to the delivery office just in case?
Thanks in advance.

It might still be at the local delivery office but I doubt it, but there's no harm in trying.
Undelivered mail that can't be returned to the sender gets sent to the Royal mail depot in Belfast. They will then open the items to see if the senders address is inside.
If this happens, I wouldn't hold out too much hope of it being returned to you.0 -
If there is no identifying address then they end up in the post graveyard in Belfast (Is it Belfast?) and after a period of time if not claimed they are opened, items inside sold off and rest destroyed.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the eBay, Auctions, Car Boot & Jumble Sales, Boost Your Income, Praise, Vents & Warnings, Overseas Holidays & Travel Planning , UK Holidays, Days Out & Entertainments boards. I thought so. There would be nothing in it to identify her or us at all, as she has sent cash not cheques.
So frustrating trying to explain to Mother in Law who is blaming firstly the person who received the mail, then the postman for not realising (agggghhhhhh).
Thank you for your help.0 -

Contact Royal Mail on 08457 740 740 and the advisor can send an enquiry through to Belfast. They will want to know when posted, colour of envelope, address details and as much information as possible.
If item had gone to BT they will have a record of it.0 -
Items arent retained at the DO's
they should be condemned and sent on the day they get back to the DO
in this case to Belfast
you have pretty much no chance without anything to help identify the letter0 -
To avoid this happening in the future tell them to put their house number/name and postcode on the back, so if it goes to the wrong address at least it stands a chance of coming back to you.
As a new postie, only started just before Christmas (what a nightmare!!) the addresses I seen included just first names, no house number in a long street. The best I had was Mr and Mrs xxxxx Halfway up Sxxx Road. Luckily I found them.0 -
Thanks so much everyone.I rang RM and they said I need to pick up some forms from the post office, and they can investigate further but they doubt they will be able to trace them. Its worth a go though, I guess.
I'm worried because M-I-L is determined she wants to complain about the postman and he hasn't done anything wrong (I've told her and so has my husband, but she will not believe that postcodes aren't personal). Do any of you postmen know how seriously the RM take complaints like this? I really really don't want anyone getting into trouble for something they haven't done.0 -

I've had things delivered to me safely without a house number on, my number's 276 & the numbers must go up to well over 300.
Most impressed with Royal Mail & my postie when that's happened. Going beyond the call of duty and all that.0 -

If the item went to BT and contained money they most certainly do record these details.
In my past life I use to work for RM business customer service and was always contacting them.
ref to complaining about postie if you want to complain ring customer service. They will note all the details and a report is sent through to the delivery office manager. Also make it clear you require feedback and do not be put off by the advisor saying we do not on the first complaint.
Also the only service insured to carry money or vouchers is Special Delivery.0 -

a complaint like that would be dismissed as a non complaint at the DO level0
