Not sure if I'm allowed to post links but this is good: Cardiff is a great city with some of the best Parks in the UK (Just behind the Castle) taking the river taxi upto Cardiff bay is a great treat for the kids and reasonably priced too.

We went to Cardiff a few years ago when my sons were about that age. We were on a budget and found the castle a bit too much for us but were impressed with the free museums. The big pit was a fair drive but worth it, we went to St.Fagins (4 miles west of Cardiff) for the afternoon but could have spent all day and also enjoyed the Roman one which linked with lower junior history work! We ate at a pub on the marina one night and a chinese buffet in a complex. Dont know if its still there but we also did the Dr who exhibition but for the money it wasn't up to much.

That's the one! Kids love buffet they don't have to chose from a menu and stick to it! We also always end up at pizza hut wherever we go:)0 -
If your children like farms then you could visit Amelia Trust Farm
http://www.ameliatrust.org.uk/index.php
Is a working farm with a small tearoom and shop, run by volunteers.
I haven't been there for a couple of years now but it was nice family day out. There is a BBQ area and picnic tables, swings/climbing frame as well as the farm animals. Trails for walks and also I remember a pottery area where kids can paint ready made figures/objects.
Is very :money: as free but you can make a donation at various boxes placed around. Details on website. Is also a nursery area - nice to walk round if you don't want to spend.
