EDf fixed til 2014

My mother is with EDF at the moment with their online saver 7 duel fuel,I'm considering switching her to the capped till 2014.
Her current spend as per the figures they have given me is below

Current Electricity Supplier
EDF Energy - Online S@ver Version 7 - Standard Domestic
Current Pay Method
Monthly Direct Debit
Current Spend
3678 kWhs per year [per year: £ 420.59; 3,678 kWhs]
Current Gas Supplier
EDF Energy - Online S@ver Version 7
Current Pay Method
Monthly Direct Debit
Current Spend
12425 kWhs per [per year: £ 452.59; 12,425 kWhs]
Future Payment Method
Monthly Direct Debit

So a combined spend of £873.18

The quote for EDF capped till 2014 is £973.59,does anyone have an opinion on whether is worth capping and also are there any social tariffs for a pensioner living alone, that may be better, this is doing my head in.
Thanks in advance

  • You should be registered online for My Account if you are on the online saver 7 tariff. If you go into that and pick the option to change product you can see the estimated prices for each tariff based on actual usage that has been reported to date.

I did my own calculations but found that the EDF calculations were very accurate too. The online saver 10 is actually cheaper than the OE 7 now; this was the cheapest option for me, should save about £50 per year.

I did not think that the 2014 fix was particularly good value myself -

Electricity is 12.61p per unit compared to 10.89p for OE7 and just 9.92p for OE10 (difference of 27%). Not great I thought for a fix that is less than 3 years.

    Gas is 3.556p per unit, 3.298 for OE7 and 3.134p for OE10, a difference of 13%.

So if you are happy to take a risk then I would switch to OE10. If you need peace of mind then go for the fix. Also bear in mind that prices on the online tariffs were increased this month so we shouldn't see an increase for at least a few months yet.
    MFiT - T2 # 64start date: 1.7.09 MFW end date: 31.10.17

    Current balance: £177,977.07 (updated 18.12.10)
    Target 12.12.12: From £194,000 to £140,000:p
    MFI-3 reductions: £16,023/£54,000 achieved (29.67%):j

  • another of the big 6 are ptting prices up - if EDF follow and do the same figures for there own increase then ,

using my own area (seeboard) elec is 9.68 per unit and gas is 3.134 for OE10 (12.37 and 3.556 for fixed 14)

now if the S&S increase is applied: 10.74p per unit and gas 3.69 for OE10

elec becomes 10.745 >> 16% less than fixed 2014 BUT gas on the fixed tarrif is actually cheaper than OE10 ! - thats on the lower S&S increase

now if edf go with the BG increase for elec - 16% , OE10 goes to 11.23 per unit , a difference of 9% to fixed 14 - in 1 year...

Just a quick note, capping is not the same as fixing. Fixing sets a price, and that is it, it doesn't change up or down for the term of the contract. Capping means prices can rise and fall, but not above a specified level (there might even be a lower level below which it won't drop). The EDF deal is fixed until 2014 - your energy will immediately be charged at the set prices from the day the switch completes for you and EDF are supplying you. If it were capped, the prices may start at a lower price but would grow over time. I'm not actually sure if there are any capped deals around.
