Yet another Boiler Question

I missed the post about filling slowly.
What a load of poppycock. As long as the system fills, it doesn't matter how long it takes.
As long as you get HW out of the hot taps sufficiently, then that is all that matters.
Halsteads have never been the best of boilers, but AFAIK parts are still available for this, although it can take about a week to get them sometimes.
Sounds like someone is trying to get a boiler change by worrying a couple of OAP's from where I'm sitting.0 -

Hi,
Perhaps you could clarify the 'filling very very slowly' bit.
As has been asked, where does the pressure relief pipework run to?
(15mm copper from the boiler to outside).

Thankyou for your replies. We're going to get another quote, he's coming tomorrow and we'll see what he says. You've just confirmed to me that the first guy was maybe spinning a line! Hopefully, the one tomorrow will be a little more informative and try and resolve any problems rather than pushing for a new boiler to be fitted. With the best will in the world, I doubt we HAVE 20 years to recoup the cost. (I'd like to think I'm wrong though) And it was the chap who came to give us the quote who said we'd need a horizontal pipe going out of the kitchen or bathroom and it would involve taking up the bathroom floor or losing a cupboard in the kitchen. Haven't had the quote yet btw. Personally, I have no idea what he's talking about, and maybe that's what he was relying on. The Halstead DOES fill very very slowly (we used to be able to hear it filling, but it's now very quiet) but, as you say, it does fill. If that doesn't matter, and it still pushes hot water and heat around, I guess it's OK. You tend to wonder if it's going to blow up or something when your told it's on its last legs! I feel a bit more confident about after 'talking' to you experts...thanks.Normal people worry me.0

Do you mean that you have to top up the system pressure on a regular basis ?
Or do you mean that a basin or sink fills very slowly?

GSR.
We have to top up the system, the sink fills up fine. ThanksNormal people worry me.0 -
Hi,
I get the feeling your boiler has been neglected.
Exactly how often and for how long have you been 'topping up' the system?

I'd be glad to see the back of a Halstead Finest Gold! (what a misleading name). Seriously though, you can still get *most* of the parts for that boiler, including fan, gas valve, all the seals etc, but it does sound like it needs some attention. Do you have it serviced every year? If it needs topping up often then it could be a number of things, but should be fixable.0

The boiler is serviced every October. He takes all the gubbins out and cleans everything, then tells us if anything needs replacing. He mentioned the 'topping up' last time, the dial on the front is always "below the bar" whatever that means (sorry). Will wait and see what second heating engineer has to say today - fingers crossed.Normal people worry me.0

If it needs constant topping up then you have a leak somewhere, either on the rad circuit or possibly a problem with the pressure relief valve (is it discharging water from the PRV overflow?).
This issue is easily resolved without fitting a new boiler! No free lunch, and no free laptop
