Dogs on lead, dogs off lead - rant

But if my dog on a lead bit a dog not on a lead, even after warning the owner.. would you think i was still uptight?
People think they know their dog, but at the end of the day a dog will go for another if he is not happy.. it's all very well people saying oh but my dog is friendly, but if mine is on a lead and muzzled because he is not a friendly dog i shout out the warning....
Most non-aggressive dogs aren't stupid enough to approach one giving off aggressive signals, or they back off pretty quickly!0 -

people sjould have their dog under control at all times, on or off lead. if they dont just once then they should lose their dog and be banned from keeping all animals for at least five years. simple.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. Of course its not ideal, I'm not saying dogs should be allowed to run riot, just that it seems like a pretty petty and mean spirited reason to force all dogs to be on lead at all times when in public.
A pair of trousers having to be washed when measured against thousands of well behaved happy dogs having their lives and exercise seriously curtailed?0 -

Ah, I didn't realise when I responded sensibly to your first post that you were in fact a nut. Sorry.0 -

If you can't stop your dog jumping on people then it should be on a lead! People should take responsibilty for their dogs!
The trousers could have been some ridiciusly expensive things, and maybe need dry cleaning (as it happens they were just out of Primark - but that doesn't change the point) - or the dog could have jumped on someone allegic to dogs, or even a fragile eldery lady and knocked her over - its not just about washing a pair of trousers.
I value the right of a human to go for a dog free walk more than I value the right of a dog to roam free. If you can keep your dog under control and away from people, go ahead and let it off the lead, if not - it should stay on the lead!
At my local beach dogs are banned completely from 9am to 7pm on the beach and only dogs on leads permitted outside these hours from the months of April to September
Everyone should be free to go for a walk without being afraid of a of jumping on them!Weight loss challenge, lose 15lb in 6 weeks before Christmas.0 -
I have the problem where I am that lots of owners walk their dogs on the pavement without a lead even though most of them have no control whatsoever on the dog and seem just let the dog trail behind them so have no idea what the dog is doing. The pavements near me are quite narrow anyway so meeting another dog on them is bad enough when the other dog is on a lead.
Report them. Dogs, by law, are required to be on lead on public roads. Walking along a pavement next to a road with loose dogs is dangerous. If the dog were to run into the road, it could cause a serious accident, not only could the dog get hurt or killed, but people too.
I know someone is going to come along now and flame me for saying that, but nothing gets solved by doing nothing. Please excuse my bad spelling and missing letters-I post here using either my iPhone or rathr rubbishy netbook, neither of whch have excellent keyboards! Sorry!0 -

You can't seriously be suggesting that one slightly under par owner means that all dogs should be on leads all the time in all public places? I've never suggested that the dog was ok to jump up, just that the response massively disproportionate.
I thought this was a sensible discussion.
Plenty of humans behave poorly, plenty of cats are a complete nuisance. Should humans and cats be banned from roaming freely in public?0 -
The issue I think, isn't really whether a dog is on or off the lead, but whether the owner can control them.
Both my Lab and Rough Collie are walked on and off depending on where we are. On busier roads, they're on lead, or in built up areas. On rural roads, parks, etc, they're fine off. By rural roads- there's a maze of roads near us, some only seeing a couple of cars a day- the dogs love them, and are controlled. They'll come when called, though it took more to train the Lab originally- she's more headstrong. On roads, they won't go too far from us- usually no more than a few paces or so....in parks etc, they remain in sight but obviously have more freedom to exercise- they both need it.
It's very common here to see dogs off lead on roads, but there are a few who really can't control them. That does annoy me- they're risking themselves, other road users, the dogs....0 -

Wrong. They are required to be under control, this doesn't have to involve a lead, although I personally think leads are important near roads for safety reasons.0
