I have started working in a self-employed capacity teaching craft classes. I know I have to declare this when re-applying for benefit but I'm not sure what is classed as my income. Is it the money I take in from the classes (regardless of what i have to pay out in materials and hall hire) or am I only classed as receiving an income once I am in profit?

As an example, my outgoings so far have been around £400 and my incomings(?) is about £175.
  • I'm thinking of moving to Scotland from west midlands and also leave my job as i want to do something eles.
If i do move there and i am unable to find a job staright a way could i make a claim for JSA or any other.

    thanks
  • Hi there,

My wife has recently decided to go self-employed. She's not registered as such, and it is only going to be sole-trader. However, she hasn't made any money yet (for the last 4 months!) and my income (£20k) doesn't cover our outgoings. Thankfully we have savings we're relying on at the moment, but they won't last forever.

Are there benefits/tax credits available for us? Or does my wife have to give up the self-employed thing and go onto JSA to get any money?

    Thanks for your help!

Can you help please, I have left my job because of bullying which was making me depressed and stressed, my doctor advised me to leave. I am having trouble finding another job, will I be able to claim Job seekers benefit as I have voluntary left my job. Thank you

    Hello
I left my job due to the same reasons I was signed off sick by the doctor which enable me to claim ESA. I have now been transfered over the JSA and explained to them the reason why i had left. They were not surprised to hear what i had to say as it is quite a common problem. All i can suggest is if you do have problems with the JSA it might be worth asking your doctor for a sicknote. You will have to attend a private medical after 14 weeks by which time i was a bit better which is why i was moved to JSA. I was so scared when i went to the Job centre so much so i ended up having a panic attack. THE job centre have so far been quite helpful and explined that they are not there to make life difficult but to help. They have refered me to their back to work counsellor. See how you get on with the JSA. Good luck x

Am self employed and have in the past put a stack of money into the business. Times are really tough at the moment and we are barely getting a wage. What we do get normally is a salary and dividend but there is no profit so no dividend. At the moment if we do get paid at all we are getting paid out of our directors loan account. Are we entitled to tax credits. Our accountant seems to think we are but hasn't been much more helpful than that
Smile though your bank is breaking:)
  • Can I apply for any benefits? I have just graduated from uni and am going travelling in october so currently finding it really difficult to get any work? Can I get job seekers or anything?

    Thanks
  • You can claim JSA but they will want more information about why you left. When you get the chance to give them your reasons, make sure you do so. You'd be amazed at how many people just don't bother then get upset when they don't get any money. But JSA decision makers are human and can only go on the information they are given. 'I left' leaves them with no option but to apply a sanction. If you have any evidence of bullying (ie intervention by your union) or if your doctor will back you up, you should be fine. If you don't want your employer to see what you have written, make this clear on the form.

Alternatively give a more general reason why you are no longer working. 'No more work' is pretty vague. That way they will contact your employer first for their version. You then get to reply to this, stating your case. But if the employer never replies to the initial query, the decision will go in your favour.

While all this is going on, you should still get your benefit. (Innocent until proven guilty) And if for some reason the decision doesn't go in your favour, you will hopefully have another job before the sanction applies. So claim today - you can do it online.

I have to say it's a few years since I worked on JSA but I don't think the rules around LV have changed that much.

To answer another question, the conditions for receiving JSA are that you are 'available, capable and activley seeking.' On holiday abroad you may be capable and could even be actively seeking but you aren't available. Sorry.

Yes, as long as your course has ended. It will be income based JSA (I presume you haven't been working?) and will take into account any other income/savings you have. You can apply for housing benefit at the same time if you need to. Again, you can apply online.
  • Hi MY husband receives the lower rate of DLA mobility and lower care DLA, he used to qualify for working tax credit before we were married, but now our joint income is too high for him to qualify. However is there a disability element of working tax credit that he should be getting regardless of his level of household income?
    Thanks
