Western Digital help..(NTFS)

having installed a new Western Digital 320gb my PC has had all manner of problems, to the extent i have had to disconnect it.The pc was just freezing up, and wouldn't do anything. It now works fine again (the PC) after disconnecting it. It installed fine, but going to shut the PC down, it just wouldn't, it just remained with the shutting down page on the screen.
I have read something about converting to NTFS with XP users,( i have NO idea what this means) could this be the problem i have. If it is then what do i need to do...will i need to uninstall it and start over ?
any help appreciated.

Is the 320GB driver your boot/system drive or an extra drive ?

What do you disconnect ? Are you installing the 320GB hard drive or an operating system ?

Can your PSU power supply unit handle the extra drive if it is an extra drive ?

If you have one partition on 320GB it will be NTFS already - have you aprtitioned the drive ?

Run any health checks on the drive - right click "My computer " - select manage >> disk management >>
    Rich people save then spend.
Poor people spend then save what's left.
  • this is a extra external hard drive, connected via a usb2 cable.
I have had to disconnect the new hard drive to get my computer to work again.
I have not done anything to the drive at all, except install it.
I read a review of this product on amazon which said they changed over to this NTFS thing??..(this is why i mention it)
I bought this product as it was a simple plug in and go,

It might be worth downloading the relevant WD software, to configure new hard drives - sometimes you have to use the relevant company's software before Windows can recognise drives of a certain size. Try the Western Digital site - there is software available for Windows (if this is a secondary drive and you already have Windows up and running) or for DOS (a bootable cd, if it is the only drive in your PC). Hope that helps.
  • if its a usb drive then I would look at reinstalling your motherboards chipset drivers and all usb drivers. Also try the caddy in a different usb port (pref one on the back actually on the motherboard) and see if that makes a difference.
