Help!! How to decode a car stereo?

My girlfriend's car battery went dead and so, subsequently did her car Stereo/Radio she attempted to put in the security code but inserted wrongly a couple of times. Now it won't let her enter any code even though she has found/realised what the actual code is. i know they sell 'codebooks' for a couple of quid on ebay, not to sure how this would work considering the security won't let us enter any code. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as the alternative might just be buy a new one.
