Letterbox Cage

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or if it should be on the "in my home" board, so sorry if it's the wrong place.

My dog has just, yet again, broken the internal letterbox flap trying to grab the mail as it comes through the door. I think this is the 3rd one now, she's also ripped a curtain when I had that up at the door last winter.

So my question is about letterbox cages, this would stop her getting the mail (and breaking the flap) but I've done the measurements it would restrict the door opening. It will be okay for just general going in and out but there are times when I need the door open all the way.

Are there any removable cages on the market? All the ones I've seen are screwed on so if I needed to take it off I'd have to unscrew it. Ideally I'd like one that I could just lift or clip off when needed.

Thanks.

why not get one on the outside wall? That's what we have done. It also means that nobody can ever stick a petrol bomb or firework through your letter box :D

We just unscrew ours if we ever need to open it really wide like to move furniture or something.

I thought about one of those but the house is rented and we're not allowed to fix anything to the outside walls :( (yet strangely we can do what we want inside).

I would do that if it just needed to be removed on an odd occasion but the doorway is quite narrow and it needs to be open fully when carrying shopping or if I'm lifting the airer outside. So it's at least several times a week if not daily that I'd have to remove it.

I wondered if instead of screws I could fix it up with hooks so I could just lift it on & off?

trouble is though, if you can just lift it off- chances are the dog will also work out how to do this, especially if it helps protect their home from the dreaded mail.

if you can figure out a way to secure it, that the dog won't be able to manage as well, that'd be better?

Yes, I believe Garden Trading sells them. They also sell mailboxes to put on an outside wall......we have one that we bought in a local shop many years ago.
  • Instead of screws, you could use bolts and wingnuts.
