Learn to drive and put some winter tyres on. Buying a 4x4 just for the few days of bad snow we get a year seems to be a bit overkill.

In terms of car (van) control and learning what happens when & why there's a lot to be said for everyone having a play like that (to say nothing of the fun side)

Sadly its frowned upon nowadays but when I was 17 and in my first year of driving, a load of us used to go to a grass car park and do powerslides and all kinds of things in the winter when it was empty. Learned a lot.
