Car Insurance Discrimination

For the last 2 years my partner has been a named driver on my car insurance, during that time she drove it once for a total of 10 miles, decided it was too powerful and was scared to drive it again. We broke up a few months ago so thought no point being on the policy this year. Immediate effect of £80 increase in premium.
Why when she never drove it?

This is yet more dicrimination against single people.

What makes this more infuriating is that my partner does not have a car of her own prefers public transport and that 10 miles is the only time she has driven in the last 9 years. So very inexperienced driver.

Did you complain when you had 2 years of cheaper premiums?

Having a second driver sometimes makes the premium lower so add another driver.

I dont think there is a question of how many miles have you driven or experiance for insurance, only the length of time you have held a licence.

The theory is that people who don't have a partner are more likely to have an accident as they're less worried about leaving behind a grieving family, the insurance stats most likely back up the theory.

That said, adding her just means that you would like her to be covered to drive your car should she wish to do so. Are you still friends and would you like her to be able to drive your car? If so add her back on!

    Discrimination?

I think you need to get a life if you think that is discrimination.

It is simply the way the risk is assessed.

I take it if you had put your partner on it an the premium went up you would have started a thread saying that you are being discriminated against for being a couple.

Given that most premiums have increased by about 40% over the last 12 months are you sure the £80 is due to her?

As a 'couple' they will have assumed she does a percentage of driving that means x% with a male driving a powerful car (accident rating high) and y% with a female driving a powerful car (accident rating low), hence lower premiums.

You're not being discriminated against because there's no reason why you can't stick her back on and get your reduction back.

I'd agree with this - my father one extra years ncb, value of car gone down, no other changes - increase of at least £70 in quotes

It did go up £20 a year as I expected it too.

You clearly need to look up the definition of discrimination, because that's exactly what it is. Admitted only minor compared to a lot of other issues.

it's not discrimination as it's nothing to do with being a 'single person'. I put my mum on my policy to bring it down and i'm not slipping her one - or anybody else for that matter.

It could be discrimination against stupid people though......

My insurance went up £80 for no reason at all, its standard procedure these days! £6.66 a month so I think we'll survive.

I suspect you moaned when petrol prices went up by 3p as well....on a 50 ltr fill up twice a month, the extra is still half of the cost of the car insurance increase.

Peeps in the uk are very good at complaining!!!

Phoned too renew policy and asked to have ex partner removed, new quote £80 more, so yes nothing to do with increases of insurance costs.

Money isn't the issue ,it's the principal that's wrong, 25% increase by removing someone from the policy and yes I have left her on.
