I recently picked up this head torch from millets in the sale from £24.99 down to £8.

It has white light, white flashing, red light and red light flashing.

    Hope it helps.

Don't agree with this at all.

Fair enough get a decent lock, but saying they will steal anything and everything including mobile phones is ridiculous.. i've never met anyone who would even contemplate doing that.

Ok in that case when did you have your training? as my husband finnished his last year in Catterick, so all what i said is true! His mobile got confiscated along with 25 others and funnily enough they all went missing and alot of guys had their stuff nicked including my husbands gas mask!

Ironing boards will be issued in the block, to about 2-3 per block.

Having your own ironing board makes your live easier as you can get on with the kit prep without joining the endless queue. The first weekend away from training many years ago, the first thing i purchased was my own ironing board.

Good luck with the training and remember "the others will nick anything and everything they can" so don't spend alot on your stuff and especially ya mobile!!!

Also make sure that you get decent locks for the lockers etc as you will need to keep these locked 247.

You will need to put your name and number onto everything becuase unless you do its not technically yours. Everything.
Son managed to "loose" 2 lots of shower gel on the 1st day!

You do need wooden coat hangers and they all have to match. We got ours from Dunlem Mill.

Also need a very good quality iron. The 1st one we bought was a good make but it still did not last the 1st 3 months.

Also need masses of boot polish, Home Bargain good for this sort of stuff.

Morrisons do huge packs of basic baby wipes for about 18p which were great for cleaning stuff.

Far better to ask questions about the stuff you need for kit from a forum and then you get the advice of people who have only just been through the system. This is what we did last year and we got some really good advice

Be aware that individual career offices give out completely different kit lists. When recruits arrive at their training depot they all have stuff that is not required.

For example, one career office kit list states a recruit has to bring 30 wooden coat hangers. Another career office will advise 10.

All of the training camps I know do not want every recruit to bring an ironing board - infact ironing boards are either supplied or come built in to the walls in the block.

It is about time someone in the UK banged the heads together of the area careers officers to stop such a stupid waste of money.

I suggest that if your kit list is supplied by a careers office then contact the training depot direct and ask them to email or post you the correct one. It could save you a fortune and prevent you struggling with heavy luggage.

If you pm me I can send you the list someone sent us last summer, it was a good place to start. And yes I did find a contact on this forum, there are some really helpful people out there, yes a lot of trolls about but not everyone.

My son did his phase one training last year at Pirbright so our info is fairly up to date.

Hankerchiefs ?????? I will have to ask son about this. I dont remember seeing this on our lists and he has never bought any or asked for them.

It's on his list - Harrogate - I understand some may be different though. Also padlocks we are wondering if Poundland ones would suffice or better to splash out on ones from DIY shop?

I understand there's things they'll need but, sheesh, going to cost a lot of money for it all so we are trying to cut costs wherever possible without leaving him with inferior stuff

Make sure everything you supply him with is security marked with his name in some way. My son had several items appropriated by room mates during his basic training and it was only discrete marking that proved the thieves for what they were. Even large items such as Ironing boards are not immune.

Also, concerning padlocks , try to get decent quality combination ones, not cheap but he won't have to worry about keeping keys safe and as he probably won't need them after basic, you can sell them as a set on Ebay or similar afterwards to get your money back (as can some of the other stuff you supply him with)

It does cost quite a bit to kit them out, best to start as early as possible, as soon as they have a date and get bits at a time. Mind you we had nearly 6 months to get the list!

As someone says mark everything up with his name and number, everything. Mine even had shower gel nicked!

Ironing boards are a bit question.

We have never bothered getting ironing boards. As one lot leaves they leave behind their boards for the next lot. When we took son down to phase 2 we were allowed into his block as we were very early and there were enough borads for them to have one each! A lot travel by trian or plane so carting ironing boards about all over the country is a bit silly
