How do i go wireless on laptop

Can anybody tell me how i get my laptop to go wireless over internet ?

Ive got a wireless switch on pc and a card slot on the side

Laptop says its wireless connection ready but i dont know what to do

You need to access it through a wireless network, if it is at home you are talking about you will need to set up your own wireless network with a router and modem to access the internet. Your laptop will then link through that wirelessly to the internet.
There are some public access wireless network that can be used, the majority charge relatively hefty monthly or one off fee for it though.

I suspect the salesman never explained this aspect fully then ?

if you have broadband you need a wireless router .. for cable a cable/dsl router, for BT lines, an adsl wireless router.
