Tax Credit renewal

Just been on the phone to renew my tax credits today.....and have been told that as my son turns 18 in August and starts University in September my child tax credit will stop and my working tax credit will be drastically reduced too. Can anyone tell me if this is right? Apart from my sons situation changing...everything else is the same, i.e. income. Someone help. :(

Well surely your son should be supporting himself then?
  • Thanks for that....it really helps. NOT.

Why doesn't it help? Why should you still receive money for someone who isn't financially dependant on you anymore? Does my head in, why should you get something for nothing? I have a 17 year old who has just left education and I will receive a lot less. I am going to work more hours to cover that! and I have a small child too.

The money you received was for HIM not you, to help bring HIM up. He should be doing that himself now as is my 17 year old. It's not rocket science.

Matthew your replies to this thread are not relevant.

My response is not aggressive. The first post I put was suggesting that the OP's son should be financially supporting himself and I stand by that.

If he's your only child then yes, on entering "advanced" education CTC will stop.

If you're single then your WTC will reduce or even stop completely as you'll lose the "lone parent/couple" element. You'll also need to work 30+ hours to get it unless your over 60.

If you're a couple then WTC will either carry on as is or stop completely- if you work 30+ hours WTC should carry on same as you get now. As above if you work under 30 hours you'll only carry on getting it you have a disability or are over 60.

When my daughter left college to go to Uni, yes the child element for her stopped at the end of August, along with child benefit. It was a significant drop as the child element is £2,555 a year :( . I Still get the family element and the child element for my other 2 children.
Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!
