Has anyone heard of/got feedback for...

Options
a company called Neu era marketing Ltd or NEM solutions?
they have called me to try to get me to sign up to a "deal" that will ensure my website is on the top 3 (in the shaded purple bit) of google for my are when searched.
I am currently assuming it's a con but is it? I have found some bad feedback about them but not huge amounts....
Your input would really be appreciated.
Thanks all,
Cindy :(

Well, the 'shaded bit' is sponsored links, so they are trying to sell you advertising space. ANYONE can get that bit for ANYTHING if they pay enough, much like I can get you the front page of The Daily Mirror if you pay enough.

Yes realise its advertising space but my question is more whether they are reputable or con artists

If by that do you mean will you pay a premium for something you can do for yourself, then yes, that's their business. I'm sure you can get accurate enough reporting from Google to prove if they did/didn't do the job, so it's really a case of what it is worth to you to get someone to do a fairly simple job for you (much like rubbish collection or drain unblocking)

I was taught how to do my own SEO work and my website has been on the first page of Google since it went live in May - it was on the first page within 3 days of going live. I am on the first page for quite a few things. Sure it takes time to do but it is something that could easily be done by you instead of paying someone hundreds of pounds (I bet their website is not on the front page of Google!).

I was approached by a company recently who said they could guarantee me front page of Google so I told them that I was already there, to which they replied that I wasn't (well, I am not for the event management business because I haven't done the SEO work yet and haven't been blogging) as soon as he started to gloat I asked him to enter my other web address and to his surprise found that I was true to my word and asked me how I got there - my response to him was pay me £150 an hour and I will tell you...click went the phone.:rotfl:

List yourself on directories the main one being DMOZ (only enter your link once on this because if you try and do it more than once Google doesnt like it and won't list your site at all). Use keywords in your site, have a blog and use keywords and meta tags in that, I tend to use longtail keywords and short keyword. I look at what other people are searching for and then use those keywords in my site. It is very easy to do if you have a wordpress site.

I visit blogs too and add my url - same goes for twitter I tweet about my business including the link to my website and my followers tend to retweet it out. I share stuff on LinkedIn and Facebook.

Don't pay anyone to do it for you when you can do it yourself. The guy who set up my website taught me how to do my own SEO work and now he considers me to be an expert because I do so well at it.

As for those sponsored ads on Google - if you spend enough on Google Adwords you can find yourself there. Personally, I would rather spend my money on something more beneficial to my business than wasting it on Google adwords or paying someone who claims to get me onto the first page of Google when their own site can be found on page 7 or 8!

One small tip to remember for the future, there is no 'absolute first page' on Google any more, there is only 'your first page'. I use this site and a certain electronics retailer disproportionately more than other similar sites - so when I search for something, I will frequently get these sites as google knows I visit them often, so must want results from them. It creates a bit of a loop or a mirror, but it means for a set of keywords I will see my own website over another equally weighted site. If you pay someone for SEO (and bearing in mind how many muppets consider themselves SEO experts), frankly they have to work hard to stop your site coming up quite high on Google *for you* if you visit it often enough, but another person will not see the same thing at all, but see *their own* site!
