For 10+ years I've been paying £50...£100 for my contents only insurance for my rented flat. Twice I've wanted to make minor claims (a leak and smash'n'grab) but in both cases the excesses made it not viable to do so, so I didn't.
Now the renewal's come through again and it's pipping £100 for at best £4000 worth of possessions only £1000 of which is readily stealable.
It's so annoying that all the insurers have a minimum cover of £15,000; £20,000 even £40,000! Does anyone cater for no frills renters?
Right now I'm thinking stick two fingers to the system and just not bother!
Pah, rant over,
Rob

£100 doesnt soundnt sound expensive, even for a small sum insured. Most household claims are under £5000 therefore, the risk doesnt completely diminish even for a small sum insured.
Also, before you cancel, please be mindful that a Household Contents policy normally covers personal liability cover (i.e if downstairs got flooded and it was your fault, or someone tripped over your doormat etc etc etc)
Be careful before cancelling.

I very nearly said that after my ex left and I was setting up home on my own. So glad I went for it because I was burgled on 7th Dec last year and they cleaned me out including the xmas presents. They got away with £4000 worth of stuff. Thankfully the insurance paid out every penny's worth. I wouldn't be without it! Been smoke free for 4 years!! :beer:0

It's not so much what is "stealable" but what is lost e.g. in a fire, and total loss.
Of course it is down to you to insure or not, if you have £4K in spare change and you can easily replace your stuff, dont bother insuring. If it would cause you serious hardship, think again.
Are you sure it is only £4K? most of us have that in shoes....;)0 -
I can only echo the above - we've just gone through a claim and the value of the clothing (for 2 of us) was well over £10,000. Remember that in the event of a total loss i.e. fire then everything you own would need replace - from the expensive items down to pens and other stuff that most people dont even consider when estimating the value of what they own.0
