Don't know what to do about my windows.

Brief summary - 3 storey terraced house, approx 100 years old, original sash windows on the front, replacement single glazed wooden windows and sills on the back which are starting to rot and need replacing.
The sash windows are fine and are staying as I really like the look of them and if they've lasted this long I'm sure they've got lots more wear in them yet.
I was originally planning to stick with wood at the back, because I thought only one needed replacing plus the ones I've got have a lovely cottagey look to them. However they are not a standard size (according to the carpenter who had a look for me) and I can't get similar replacement ones "off the shelf". Plus paying to have them painted every few years is expensive because of the height, although I'm still going to have to have the front windows painted anyway.
I do not live in a "nice" area where having original wooden windows is a bonus, I live in a rundown area where cheap pvc double glazing is the norm. I'm wondering it it'd look a bit weird having wood at the front and plastic on the back.
So any comments would be appreciated, plus whether I look at replacement wood or pvc I have no idea where to start or how to find a reputable company. I probably can't afford top of the range stuff, but I'm happy to pay for good value windows that will last, I'm not after the cheapest rate going.
Thanks

All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Www.doubleglazingcompanies.com is a good place to start. Don't worry about mixed materials front and rear even same room won't notice with curtains, blinds, shutters. Just because it's not posh doesn't mean you cannot get good quality sash windows with run through horns, White foil, and authentic detailing. You should sell you home easier than those who have fitted cheap casement windows
SashmanBuying quality goods which last, should be an investment that saves money. :T
Buying cheap products which fail, wastes money and costs twice as much in the long run. :mad:0
