CHanging line rental supplier

Hi

I recently wanted to change to a cheaper supplier thinking it would be no problem. I contacted my broadband supplier as it stated must be a BT line or similar. They advised you had to stay with BT for the line.

SUrely this cant be right??

Staying with BT is strongly recommended to avoid possible unwelcome surprises later and so that access to all cheap call providers remains available.

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Some Broadband suppliers still insist you have a BT supplied and billed line. Others will now accept those supplied by BT Wholesale but billed by say the likes of Talk Talk.

As Heinz points out its not a great idea to move your line rental away from BT for a number of reasons. In many cases people have ended up paying more for their monthly line rental/services.
  • Thanks for that Heinz. I switched call provider about 18 months ago and from checking some of the comparison sites seems i can save about £200 quid but most of the best deals seem to jumble the line rental and calls together making it harder to draw the comparisons

Another problem that is cropping up if you move your line rental from BT to another supplier,is should you wish to move eg Talk Talk will advise you to move back to BT. Then sign up with them again after BT have got you up and running,at your new address.

    They do that deliberately.

Remember too that comparison sites make their money by people using them to switch so, although they don't lie, they can be 'economical with the truth' when it suits their purpose.

IMHO, Martin's article (link in my signature below) is the place to start and, having read through that, my own suggestions (the other link in my signature below) may help decision-making.
