    The simple answer to the OP is that she is not liable for her husband's debts.
    No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    As well as the negative equity, there is a clause in the lease stating that the property cannot be sublet.

    Is it possible for you to post that clause in full with the exact wording?

    People very often believe that a clause that says they are not allowed to sublet means they cannot have tenants, however providing you are letting to a family unit and you are letting the whole of the property then normally you can.

    Subletting, in most instances, really means you are letting out a part of the property.

    But her credit record can be tarnished by linked financial products of course, and joint assets are vulnerable.

    OP, I agree with jamie on the subletting issue- try to get advice on this matter because such clauses are often difficult to enforce so it's possible you can let it.
