OH DEAR! My bathroom's now ruined!!

Oh dear!!! what have I done
It all started so well
... I bought some mould spray because the sealant round the edge of the bath (plastic strip attached with sealant round edges) had started to have spots of mould on. I sprayed it on - waited a few minutes and then started to scrub.
Then it went wrong ... all the sealant started coming off and before I knew it all the plastic edging had come off too leaving great big black marks and loads of sealant bits all round the edge of the bath!!!:eek:
I've tried scraping it off with a sharp knife ... but it's like springy superglue in there ... and I've no idea what the black stuff it - it must have been building up for about 20 ears :eek:
PLEASE HELP!! I've NO idea what to do
I've got 3 manky plastic edging strips and a horrid black gunky edge to my bath now

Oh my goodness. All I can suggest is scrubbing hard and then getting some new sealent and resealing it. Make sure that if you're doing a bath that you fill the bath with water first to weight it down.Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx
March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.0 -
Oh dear.
It's going to cost you about a tenner I'd say top renew it but all's not lost.
B&Q will have some meths to clean all the old gunk off. Then a new roll of sealing strip to replace the old one.
The meths might even clean up the old strips but then you'd have to buy silicon to glue it back on.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Old style MoneySaving boards.

To clean black mould off of sealant in future , just put normal bleach on it and then cover with tissue paper and leave overnight.
No scrubbing or expensive chemicals required. If it's raelly bad, you may need to repeat, but it does work."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
I'm afraid that meths is highly unlikely to remove old silicon. It's extremely tough to get off. You can buy from the DIY places a special jelly for removing it, but even with that it's a longish job with several applications and the jelly is something like £6.99 for a tube.
The alternative is to CAREFULLY use a very sharp modelling/stanley knife to cut the silicon away leaving only a thin layer, then re-fix your old strip or a new new strip to cover. If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me!0 -

Alternatively, stand in the bath yourself as you put the sealant on. The important thing is that the bath is weighed down, so the sealant doesn't split from the bath the first time you use it. And definitely don't be tempted to let the sealant get water on it before it has properly set. Good luck.0 -

I'd say that the stanley knife is the way to go.
I've tried the silicone remover and found it pretty useless.
I know its not much use now but when you get the new stuff on its best to just wash the seals down once a week with neat bleach and then wipe off.
I've always done this and never had mould in nearly 40 years.0 -
I used a wee plastic tool from a DIY shop, that has a razor blade fitted in it (the kind of thing that you can use for scraping paint of windows after painting the frames) to remove old silicon.
This guy recommends WD40, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruxEhgI4NW4
When you are putting the new silicon on use your finger to smooth it out, but dip it in water with a bit of washing liquid in it first.First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.0 -

Lidl have a sealant cutter:
Use the pointed end to remove sealant from surfaces without damage
Use the flat end to smooth out sealant when newly applied
Offer starts today.
It's more expensive but many people find a fugenboy gives very good results.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

Vaseline also works well to smooth silicone. Fill the bath before the sealant dries and leave for a good few hours until it's properly dry.0
