You can't usually receive JSA whilst out of the uk. Even if you don't miss a signing date you are required to tell them that you have been (actually should be that you are going) overseas.

They will then advise. Basically it doesn't cover short visits and you have to register with relevant overseas and prove that you are looking for work. Then it's time limited and also depends on kind of jsa you are receiving.

They will end this claim as he will be required to sign off. He then needs to phone and do a rapid reclaim. He will be paid up until he leftbthe country.

His new claim should be able to be backdated to the day after his return but you have to ask as it's not automatic.

Yes, you're right, I think it just took me by surprise that you need to inform of short break. Guess I need to read the small print!.:)

Are you sure he was sick? When I was 18 I would have been so hung over I would have been unable to sign on or call. If you don't call or let them know in any other way he deserves to start from scratch. He will probably get sanctions as well saying that he can't sign on for a period of time or reduced payments etc.

His claim wasn't cancelled because he missed his signing, it was cancelled because he was out of the country.

how do they know? Did she tell them that he had been out of the country?
I assumed it was cancelled because he missed his sign-on?

OP - Never actually tell them if you are leaving the country! You should have just phoned them up a on the morning he was due to sign and said that he was at home feeling very ill and unable to leave the house.

How about no longer being masochistic?
    How about remembering your divinity?
How about unabashedly bawling your eyes out?
How about not equating death with stopping?

Yep, I'm afraid I'm the guilty party here, (if only I'd checked first before calling them this morning) doh me! :oIn our defense, it was only 3 days and you can check jobs on internet and email cv's etc(but I wont be arguing the case haha) also, it was me who was sick which is why we had to stay the extra night, tbh I usually remind him when to sign and it's marked on the calender at home, but I was too busy dealing with bout of food poisoning I didn't even think.

Never mind, I'm still really really hoping he gets this apprenticeship as he was ever so confident after interview. and with a bit of luck we'll hear about that before has to re-sign! :) (positive thinking):)

Well, don't worry about it now. No big deal really. He can always rapid re-claim, and as you say, the apprenticeship could work out anyway...

isnt that covered by the question that asks what date do you want to claim from.

Yes and no. If he made the claim immediately on 1st working day after on his return then he could claim to when he returned even if a Friday Saturday. But backdating a claim is discretionary and if he hasn't reclaimed on the 1st day possible then they may apply discretion and the date you want to claim from may not be accepted.

I am not certain that with a rapid reclaim you get asked. I think there is an assumption that you claim as soon as you can and that is the date. But not 100 per cent certain.
