Wife 6 days late but 2 negative pregnancy tests

Sorry for the gruesome title!

My wife is 6 days late and we have carried out two pregnancy tests and both negative.

We are going to see a doctor soon since this is not normal for her.

Any ladies here been in a simmilar situation. They say it could be stress but 6 days late?! Also, there is no reason for her to be stressed.

You can get a false negative if very, very early on because there isn't much hormone to detect. Have you tried a first response type kit?

I'm usually regular as clockwork but recently I completely missed a period and then had 2 in the space where I would normally have one so these things do happen, although I'm 40 which could be a factor for me. How old is your wife?

Also, when I was pregnant with my daughter I was convinced I was pregnant but the tests came up negative until I was 2 weeks late. This was 12 years ago mind and I think the tests are a bit more sensitive now.

Do you have children already? Does she have any symptoms to suggest anything one way or the other IYKWIM?

One final thing, sometimes you think you aren't stressed but fairly minor things can knock you off course.

    Hi my wife is 29.

What is worrying me is that 3 days ago she went into hospital to have her wisdom teeth removed. She had to go on general anthestic so they did a pregnancy test on her and it was negative - she was 3 days late at the time.

Since then she has been on painkillers and yet her period has not started. Its been 6 days now. As you can imagine we are terrified. My wife is in pain after the surgery but we dont want her to keep taking pain killers if she might be pregnant.

We have booked an appointment with GP on Saturday but I will buy another kit today.

Im in a strange frame of mind now; we are desperate for a baby but I dont want my wife to be pregnant now due to all the medication she has been on since her wisdom tooth removal. I dont want the drugs to harm the feotus.

Hi there, does your wife know when she ovulated? she could have ovulated late, which could cause her cycles to be late. also, it is common for women to have an annovulatory cycle occasionally (no ovulation) which can cause the cycle to be much longer.

This happened to me in March, and I was 10 days late, when I'm normally pretty regular.

    hope this helps,

Agree with Liney. I think wisdom tooth surgery would be pretty stressful.

If it does turn out that she is pregnant, to put things in perspective... the vast majority of women don't know they are pregnant straight away especially if they aren't trying and so may drink etc but still go on to have perfectly healthy babies.

Try not to worry too much and let us know how it pans out :)

Not all pain relief, even heavy duty stuff, is dangerous in pregnancy and if there was any doubt at all at the time that she might be pregnant but too early to test, they may well have played safe and prescribed a safe one. You could google to check as we cant give that kind of advice on here.

Otherwise as others have said periods often turn up late or miss a cycle when you are trying to conceive even if you were regular as clockwork before. Just one of those little tricks the body likes to play!

I had to look at this post to check you weren't my husband as I had a similar problem last weeked. I had the norovirus and it shook my body up. I then was 6 days late and tried two pregnancy tests. I read up that illness and such like can effect your monthly cycle so I wouldn't worry.

I understand that pregnancy tests are very accurate and detect very early.

    Good luck for the future
  • Stress isn't just mental stress. Your wife's body has been under stress by having an anaesthetic. I don't think the medication would harm the foetus either tbh. If she's had surgery (wisdom tooth is deemed major surgery due to risk of infection and recovery) then it could be a lack of build up in the womb. That combined with blood travelling to another part of the body could have caused her to be late. Hope all goes well at the docs. From personal experience I have been up to 2weeks late when my body has been under stress. Best Wishes for tomorrow.
